Our spotlight is on Sheila Mires, CMP, Associate Director of Convention Services, Visit Baltimore, Recipient of the 2010 Successful Meetings CSM of the Year Award.

MiresPlease provide a brief overview of your position/venue. As the Associate Director of Convention Services with Visit Baltimore, I assist meeting planners in the successful production of their conventions and meetings by working as a key contact once Baltimore has been selected as the meeting location. I also provide event promotion and logistic assistance throughout the entire planning process until the completion of their meeting.

How long have you been with your venue? 5 ½ years.

Where did you work previously, and in what positions? Prior to Visit Baltimore, I worked for Marriott starting in San Diego, CA as a Banquet Assistant and over eight years working my way up and across the country to Sr. Event Manager at Crystal Gateway in VA.

How did you become involved in the meetings industry? I became involved in the meetings industry when a friend recruited me to assist with the Stamford CT Chamber of Commerce as an Ambassador for their local meetings. And I never looked back!

Have you received your CMP designation? Yes, 2001.

If yes, what do you find as the main benefit of having your CMP? The benefit to having my CMP is the network of people that you have access to. It’s like belonging to a special club without the handshake.

Have you received any special honors, awards and/or recognition within your field or by your employer? What could be more special than 2010 CSM of the Year?

Are you affiliated with industry and/or professional organizations/ associations in addition to ACOM? Have you held any leadership positions with those organizations? I have served on the Board for the Chesapeake Chapter of PCMA for the past five years in the following positions: Program Chair, Director, Incoming President and President for two years.

What has been your personal involvement with ACOM to date? I have attended five of the six previous ACOM Annual meetings. I served on the Annual planning committee as well as served on a panel for CVBs. I am currently serving on the Marketing Committee.

What is your favorite thing about ACOM? My favorite thing about ACOM is getting together once a year with friends, sharing and learning new ideas with other CVBs as well as keeping up to date with current trends throughout the CVBs, Hotels and Centers.

Where did you receive your higher education and what was your main field of study? Western CT State University studying business.

What are your leisure-time talents, hobbies, community involvements or interests that you would like to share? I enjoy making cards, I collect all things for scrapbooking and scrapbook very little. I also enjoy reading, biking and free time!
