Networking Zone
The cool place to “meet” up with fellow members

ACOM Hosting a Webinar: “Top Clauses for Contract Negotiations”
Date: Thursday, May 21
Time: 1:00pm ET
Topic: Top Clauses for Contract Negotiations
Speaker: Sam Erkonen, Howe and Hutton

Local Luncheons
ACOM is excited to have launched a monthly Local Luncheon program in 2009. A Luncheon is being held in one location each month, in conjunction with ACOM’s Webinar or Idea Network programs.

There is a member “host” in each location who leads the effort to coordinate a venue and invite people from their local Convention Services community. Both members and non-members are welcome...the objective is networking! So far Washington, D.C. and Overland Park, Kansas have participated! Are you interested?

Participants will register to attend (there are no registration fees) and the timing will coincide with an ACOM Webinar or Idea Network. Lunch will be provided. The group will have an opportunity to participate in the ACOM program, then have open discussion once the program is complete.

This is a great way for members to meet other CSMs in your local area, and kick off future get-togethers!

We are in the process of confirming locations for the remainder of the year and will post them to the ACOM Website. If you are interested in hosting one, please contact us at 609-799-3712. We are arranging one location per month.

What CSMs Are Talking About
The latest buzz from a fellow CSM

Submitted by Shawn-Ta Wilson, CMP
Assistant Director of Convention Services, Tampa Convention Center

Make each event as important as the last and the next. This can be terribly difficult during the busy seasons in particular. It can be hard to give each event the time and attention it deserves. There are ways, however, to re-energize yourself enough to be able to provide optimal service to each of them. Taking a day off, or preferably two, after very large, complex, and time consuming events allows time for the body and soul to rejuvenate. Use floor managers as often as possible as well.

Did you know that ACOM has a LinkedIn page?

Members have spoken and ACOM has heard you! 2009 is quickly becoming the year of social networking. ACOM launched the LinkedIn page in the beginning of 2009 to give members a forum for open discussion and networking through one channel of communication. Don’t miss the opportunity to ask questions or respond to a posting to help other CSMs with suggestions, feedback or even support.

Case in point – this question was recently posted with members providing feedback.
In the past few weeks, some of our ACOM members have been laid off - what impact has your company (hotel, bureau or center) directly felt as a result of today's uncertain economy?

If you would like to join ACOM’s LinkedIn page, you can search under Groups for “ACOM.” You must be a member to join the ACOM group. Get involved today!

Eight Things to Think About and DO During These Times
Published in: “Julio’s Mental Snacks” by Julio Melara, President of Business Report, Publisher of 225 Magazine in Baton Rouge, LA

It's amazing what rest and relaxation can do for your mind, spirit and body. Just got back from skiing with my family and had time to read and recalibrate my brain and perspective. Regardless of what is happening in the news today, I want to share with you eight concepts that will help you continue to move forward in your work and personal life. Here they are:

1. Growth is all about the level of SERVICE you deliver! The quality of your service is the driving force of your relationships and your revenue. What are you doing to strengthen relationships? What are you doing to raise the level of service, quality and value that you deliver?

2. You're a leader, so LEAD! Your colleagues, customers and direct reports are looking to YOU for guidance, direction, coaching and a game plan for the future. You must have a mindset that determines the direction and perspective of your team and your personal results.

3. Control what you CAN control. Stop worrying about all the other stuff happening nationally that you can't do a thing about. Don't let national headlines control you or the way you THINK! Many are hurting, but also many are growing and prospering. You can control your attitude, the way you think, the way you approach your work and your relationships. When you feel in control, it helps you to examine and re-engineer things, and then EXECUTE!

4. Accept that the future is filled with uncertainty. Many are operating out of FEAR but you must operate by FAITH. Your present actions and choices determine the future. You create it!

5. Let's be excellent STEWARDS of our current resources. We must be thrifty and conscientious of all expenses. Don't ever compromise the quality of your products or service. You can't cut your way to growth. Nevertheless, stick to your budget and continue to think of ways to SAVE money.

6. TAKE ACTION! Be Decisive. Don't talk...DO! It's not enough to know, you must do. Don't just stand around. Do something. None of us are compensated for intent. We are compensated for RESULTS!

7. This is a time for focus and discipline! Make sure you have your goals and priorities in writing and look at them daily. The future does not get better by hope. It gets better by planning. And to plan for the future you need goals.

8. If it were EASY they'd all be doing it, baby! These are not times to sit back and worry, cry, whine, make excuses or complain. It is time for ACTION! Invest in your education. Invest in your people. Invest in technology. Robert Schuller is the person who said, "Tough times don't last, but tough people do." He was right. Those who are tough have a strong belief system, they prepare, and they continue to grow and learn every day.
