CIC Activates Industry Collaboration on Sustainability

The Convention Industry Council (CIC) Task Force on Sustainability and Responsibility convened for the first time at the Professional Convention Management Association’s (PCMA) Annual Meeting in Seattle. The task force was formed in response to the growing demand of industry professionals for timely information and education about issues and opportunities surrounding environmental and social responsibility.

“Industry professionals around the world are scrambling to pursue sustainability and responsibility,” said Brenda Anderson, Chair of the CIC Board of Directors and CEO of the Society of Incentive and Travel Executives (SITE). “Industry collaboration is essential if we are to meet the knowledge and information needs of these professionals, their clients and attendees, rather than duplicating individual efforts.”

Anderson appointed Bruce MacMillan, President and CEO of Meeting Professionals International (MPI), to chair the task force. Other members include leaders from the American Society of Association Executives & The Center for Association Leadership (ASAE & The Center), the Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), the National Business Travel Association (NBTA), the International Association for Exhibitions and Events (IAEE), the National Coalition of Black Meeting Planners (NCBMP), and CIC’s Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX) initiative.

“By combining our existing information and financial resources around a single industry plan, we can move quickly and effectively to address our constituents’ knowledge needs and can raise the bar across the industry,” said MacMillan.

In its first meeting, the task force identified three initial action priorities: compiling a repository of green meetings practices, developing education around industry sustainability, and identifying measurement tools for sustainability practices. Other potential areas of exploration include social responsibility opportunities, regulatory impact, research, and certification.

The taskforce will continue to meet to determine how each member organization can contribute their resources for any of these identified priorities. More information about the task force’s activities and initiatives will be released as they become available.

The Convention Industry Council’s 31 member organizations represent more than 100,000 individuals and 16,500 firms and properties involved in the meetings, conventions and exhibitions industry. CIC facilitates the exchange of information develops programs to promote professionalism within the industry; and educates the public on its profound economic impact. CIC’s programs include the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) program, the Accepted Practices Exchange (APEX) initiative, the Hall of Leaders, Project Attrition, and the CIC Economic Impact Study.
